Research Interests
Our research goal is to study the molecular mechanisms of human diseases
through the study of normal and aberrant development and function of
model organisms. Our research approach is the generation of mouse
mutants with the goal of creating in vivo experimental models from which
we can learn more about the molecular mechanisms underlying function and
dysfunction of the organism. The generation of mouse models utilizes
molecular biological and transgenic technologies; the analysis of mouse
models includes anatomical, biochemical, physiological, and behavioral
studies.
We have generated a number of mouse mutant strains through targeted
mutagenesis in embryonic stem cells. We are currently focusing our
research on the analysis of a mouse mutant lacking proopiomelanocortin (POMC).
POMC gene products are associated with a wide variety of functions,
including energy homeostasis, lipolysis, adrenal maintenance and
function, enhancement of learning and memory, anti-inflammatory effects
and alteration of pigmentation. Accordingly, several projects in the
laboratory are concerned with the detailed phenotype analysis of the
POMC null mutant model (see publications listed below).
The underlying motivation for our studies is less the reduction of
biological processes to basic interactions, but rather the understanding
of the integration of biological processes into complex homeostases.
