OMRF accepting summer scholarship applications
The program lets students enhance their research skills by working alongside world-class scientists for eight weeks in OMRF's state-of-the art laboratories. the application deadline is February 1. "The Fleming scholar program provides a phenomenal experience to young people who excel in the sciences," said OMRF President Stephen Prescott, M.D. "Few other opportunities of this depth exist for students at this stage of their education. It can be a real jump start on a career in medical research." High school seniors, as well as college freshmen, sophomores and juniors, are eligible to apply for Fleming scholarships. Students must be Oklahoma residents at the time of high school graduation and at least 16 years of age to qualify. Scholarships include housing, if needed, and a $3,000 stipend. Named for the Nobel-prize winning scientist, Sir Alexander Fleming who dedicated OMRF, the scholarship program has provided a summer research experience to more than 445 Oklahoma students since 1956. More that 150 Fleming Scholars have gone on to become successful researchers and physicians, including three current OMRF scientists: Rodger McEver, M.D., Judith James, M.D., Ph.D., and Andrea Sestak, M.D., Ph.D.
