OKLAHOMA
CITY, November 15, 2005—The Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation has created a
large-print version of Findings, its award-winning science magazine.
Large-print Findings will be published three times a year,
and will be available at no cost by mail. The free publication will also be distributed at
retirement communities throughout the state.
"Since 1991, Findings has served as Oklahoma's voice
for medical research," said OMRF President J. Donald Capra, M.D. "Our new large-print
edition will continue to offer all the latest research breakthroughs and human-interest stories,
but with larger fonts and simpler layouts designed to be gentler on the eyes."
Currently, the standard-print edition of Findings is mailed
to more than 70,000 readers. It is also available at public libraries, bookstores and banks
throughout the state. By creating an easier-to-read edition, Capra hopes that OMRF can provide
a service to older Oklahomans and others with visual challenges.
"Our goal is to bring educational, informational stories to
people who have few reading resources," said Capra. "OMRF is an institution that
exists because of the generosity of Oklahomans, and this is one, small way that we can give
back to some of the people who make our work possible."
The Fall 2005 large-print issue, which is now available, focuses
on the autoimmune disease lupus. The magazine features stories about a scientist who has spent
his career tracking the disease, a graduate student training to become a lupus researcher,
and an Oklahoma woman who has lived with lupus since she was 9.
In the last month, the standard-print edition of Findings
has twice been recognized with top honors in competitions. At the Silver Quill Awards in
College Station, Texas, it won the prize as best magazine in the International Association of
Business Communicators' 16-state Southern Region. Findings likewise took home
first price at the Upper Case Awards, sponsored by the Oklahoma chapter of the Public Relations
Society of America.
